Another Angband variant

Sil attempts to move the game closer to the source material.

Anybody able to compile it in linux yet? If so, care to post some pointers?

I thought address space randomization would prevent you sharing pointers...

(I'm here all week).

Sadly I just get a black screen (win7 64 bit). :(

@Andrew: Hah! :)

Seriously, though, there are some files missing in the src zip file. The Makefile (.std) makes reference to main-cap.c and maid-x11.h, neither of which exist, and yes, it says "maid". Removing main-cap references didn't seem to hurt anything. But "main-x11.h", as I suppose it should be called, must have had some declarations that main-x11.c is missing.

I'll see if I can notify the author.

Wasn't actually DarkGod doing it and then got C&D'd from the Tolkien estate?

Andrew Doull said...

The only C'n'D I'm aware of is from using Pern, not Tolkien...

I've been contacted by more than one developer about being denied permission to use a property. Either preemptively or via threat letter. I'll not mention who they are because they wish to remain unknown. Plus it's not my story to tell.

I was thinking of writing a little advice column on Temple letting people know how to get around it. But I don't want to embolden anyone and get them in trouble.

As for the game it seems to be coming right along. It has those disconnected windows one used to see in old Space Empire games like VGA Planets (an addon) and Stars! (if memory serves).

I dig it. Dunno how good the game is. But first impressions are good. BTW I was running the windows exe provided by the author and it did just fine. I'm on a fully patched up Vista machine.

Some words of advice for those who haven't tried it yet:

You can only go DOWN. Using the UP stairs will either land you on a different floor at the same height, or a lower floor.
Morgoth's dark influence beckons you ever onward...

The orcs are smart.
Not *quite* Smart Kobolds-smart, but eerily close.

Those orcs like to run away screaming it seems. Been playing a bit. I like the tutorial. I also like how damage is flashed on the screen on top of the guy you are slaying. I also like how all the windows are displayed at once so I don't have to flip around. I can see my inventory at all times.

Not sure how much of this is in vanilla Angband because I've not played it. But I like it.
